“And the spell of the dots and the mesh unfolded me in a magical curtain of mysterious, invisible power.” – Yayoi Kusama
Over half a century ago in 1959, Yayoi Kusama debuted her solo show in New York at the Brata Gallery with just five white monochromatic paintings – the Infinity Nets. Each painting was a tightly knitted mesh of tangible surface texture, resulting from an arched semi-circle repeated tirelessly over time. The paintings took the New York art scene by storm and cemented Kusama’s unparalleled status as an Asian female artist in the white male-dominated realm. It is the artist’s longest-running series in her expansive oeuvre, and one that she periodically return to up till the present days.
This season, Christie’s Hong Kong is thrilled to present INFINITY-NETS [KLN] more than six decades after the inception of the series, offering us a glimpse into the infinity of Kusama’s unbounded creative universe.
