New research! A recent study led by Museum scientist Melina Giakoumis confirms that two species of sea stars, the common sea star (Asterias rubens) and the Forbes’ sea star (Asterias forbesi), are crossbreeding in the wild. Hybridizing occurs where their ranges overlap, with the Gulf of Maine—a region that’s warming faster than 99 percent of the global ocean—in the center. Sea stars are a keystone species and they play a crucial role in maintaining the health and stability of their ecosystem. Studying keystone species like these can help scientists better assess the impacts of climate change in the North Atlantic.
