Opening this Thursday, September 7, "Art for the Millions: American Culture and Politics in the 1930s" explores the art and visual culture that reflected the unsettled environment of 1930s America.

When the Great Depression left nearly 25% of the workforce unemployed, Americans searched for their cultural identity at a time marked by divisive politics, threats to democracy, and intensified social activism, including a powerful labor movement.

Artists like Elizabeth Olds captured the struggles and hardships of this era through a range of media. Her 1942 screenprint "Miner Joe" depicts a lone figure in a helmet and overalls—its title suggesting an ordinary worker, yet Old’s treatment elevating the subject's valor.
