福間洸太朗さんのインスタグラム写真 - (福間洸太朗Instagram)「Exactly 20 years ago today, my life changed tremendously by receiving this honorable award.I am very grateful to the Cleveland International Piano Competition for giving me the opportunity to debut as a pianist and opening many doors. Today, I want to share my story hidden behind the result of the competition. There was a big article in the local newspaper the day after the competition's end, and the critic apparently wasn't convinced with the result and criticized my immature playing. I was shocked and sad to read it. Also, as a part of the reward, I was going to work with an agent in USA for several years, and at the first meeting with my new agent, I was asked about my concerto repertoire, and I honestly named five concertos I had studied by then, of which I had performed only two with orchestras. I clearly remember the surprised face of the competition's executive director which said "What!? 😳". Then I wondered if I really deserved to be the 1st prize winner of the competition. However, in the end, those negative aspects became a springboard for me to study harder to become a musician worthy of the title, which led to my subsequent activities. I am now grateful to everyone, including the critic who taught me the harshness of the world of professional musicians. Today, I remind myself of the feelings I had after winning the CIPC and commit myself to study music even more deeply (not harder!). Thank you for your continued support.
