Hakurai Turnips, The Paideia School, Atlanta, GA. Photo by @peteressick. This picture was taken this morning in the urban agriculture garden at my son's school. I have been doing some photos for a new sustainability web site for the school. This morning before I left I saw a picture on the news of some New Yorkers dumpster diving for food, and it reminded me of how important the issue of urban agriculture and sustainable local food really is. I have been learning the wet plate collodion process and am working on a series of still life photos from the garden. The handmade nature of this early photographic technique seems appropriate for a subject matter concerning getting back to basics. So as the sun was shining brightly on my turnips, things are pretty rough for a lot of people caught in the path of Hurricane Sandy. I hope for the sake of our children and grandchildren this disaster can at least become a teachable moment. Certainly the climate scientists and artists such as Bruce Springsteen have been talking and singing about these issues for a long time. And there is no doubt that photography is playing a huge role in how we collectively understand this catastrophe.
