This is the actual story of how I ended up breastfeeding my son on national television. 💙🤱

It had been a long lockdown, I was a new mum battling identity struggles and I was paranoid I'd never work again because I'd be written off as "just a mum". (Isn't it crazy that we're expected to love all aspects of motherhood but should never just be a mum, as if it's not important a role in itself).

So when the Jeremy Vine show invited me on, I jumped at the chance. Up until then all TV had been on zoom. It was the first time back in the studio. And a chance to still be me. Not Ashley the mum. Just Ashley.

But the problem was: the logistics. Alfie was breastfeeding and wouldn't take a bottle.

So Tommy took a day's holiday from work and agreed to sit with Alf in the greenroom - providing he wouldn't have to be on camera. He wanted to support my career.

Alf was a big baby and fed regularly, plus it had been lockdown so I'd never really had to be away from him. So I was so scared that he'd need me.

The production team were amazing and promised me if he needed me, we'd make it work.

Things were going smoothly - until Alf had a huge poo explosion moments before going live! 🤣💩

Jeremy asked if we could introduce him to everyone and as I was part of their family I agreed. Whilst we were talking Alf started to want feed. I panicked, but then my maternal instinct kicked in and I thought his hunger was more important than anything else.

At first I was gutted. I wanted to be Ashley, the professional, not Ashley the mum. And now I was being Ashley the mum, on TV.

I came off the show to so many comments about how I was attention seeking and it struck me as strange that I'd want attention, that it was even worthy of being something you do for attention. Feeding a baby should be unremarkable. And ive also been told I'm an attention seeker ever since my boobs were big at 13 years old. And I've never wanted the attention.

But then I realised that's why it's so important to normalise breastfeeding. To fight against the hypersexualisation of boobs and the stigma of feeding a baby in public. And to show the reality of juggling motherhood and a career. 💪🤱🩷
