During my winter in Japan, my favourite discovery deviated from my normal “one-track mind” for furniture. It was another form of functional art and experimental design: the instruments and music created by Open Reel Ensemble (@Open Reel Ensemble).

One of the most curious aspects of Japanese culture, from an outsider’s point of view, may be the juxtaposition of the rule-laden sobriety of society and its labyrinth of subcultures and boundary-pushing creative experimentation.

Using vintage music reels (as their name suggests), the band develops new technological advancements and innovations in electronic music. Before the digital era, music used to be recorded on magnetic tapes snug tight around open reels, which are vinyl-sized wheels containing meters of this tape. Ei Wada, Haruka Yoshida, and Masaru Yoshida, the avant-garde trio behind the Open Reel Ensemble, manipulate the vintage reels by tapping, plucking and distorting the metres of tape’s original use by distorting them with electronic instruments.

Played this way, the open reel tape is nearly acoustic.
