‘Tana kara botamochi’ literally translates as ‘botamochi falling from a shelf.’😯
‘Botamochi’ is a traditional Japanese sweet (wagashi) and ‘tana’ means shelf.
‘Botamochi’ is made from glutinous rice and sweetened azuki red bean paste.🌾🫘
As sugar was once expensive, people couldn’t eat sweets as easily as they do today.
So, just like a tasty botamochi slipping off a shelf into your hand, this phrase is used when you receive a windfall or get an advantage without making any effort.🍀💴
The phrase is written in a combination of kanji and hiragana:
棚 - たな - tana - shelf, から - kara - from, ぼたもち - botamochi.
Swipe to hear how to say ‘tana kara botamochi’.👉👂
(These days the phrase is often shortened to ‘tanabota’.)
Have you eaten ‘botamochi’?😋
