“The staging of CHANEL’s Métiers d’Art show in the Senegalese
capital of Dakar may have come as a surprise to many. It is usual
for big fashion houses like CHANEL to choose certain destinations
for some of their shows, but in this case the show only marked the
beginning of an intended long-term creative partnership. CHANEL
wasn’t solely looking for a destination, but instead for an open and
ongoing creative dialogue for which it launched its first international
program there. Dakar itself is a city with a rich and vibrant cultural
scene, being one of the epicenters for fashion and art on the African
continent. What made this especially meaningful was the inclusion
of countless local talents from various artistic disciplines.”
