A natural-born problem-solver with a pragmatic approach to design, Kelley started his career in Herman Miller Research Division in 1962, just as technology was bringing a sea change to the world of work. Kelley was instrumental in the design of Action Office, the world’s first open-plan office system, and Co/Struc, the first movable modular system for hospitals, two product systems that transformed the office and healthcare industries. He also made computer history with his prototype of a keyboard console that included the world’s first mousepad—16 years before the mouse was commercially available. Kelley held many patents and won a number of design awards.
