In March 2020, six weeks after the release of his sophomore album Dreaming of David, @ryanbeatty went missing.
The pandemic shut down America and Ryan – a man familiar with long periods of quiet, preferring them even – cancelled his tour, the only public commitment to his album cycle.
“I found a lot of comfort in just being quiet. I wanted to live more life before I started making anything else. Sometimes people forget that that’s possible for themselves,“ he explains.
Ryan broke his three year silence in March 2023 by announcing a new album called Calico on Instagram. “i’ll save my monologue for another day,” the caption read, “but for now you should know that i’m smiling.”
Having spent half a decade making obscure electronic pop and collaborating with Tyler, the Creator, the project was a sharp left-turn. Fans have since hailed it his masterpiece.
At the link in bio, the elusive musician opens up on the earth and emotional grit of his new album, and more.
