This project has been developed with support from the National Geographic Society and the Climate Pledge.   In these pictures:  Chuquicamata is a village established when an adjacent copper mine opened. After significant mining and open-pit expansion, the town ended up being too close to the mining operations and was then relocated.  Chuquicamata’s pit is the largest open-pit copper mine by extracted volume in the world.   Chilean lithium is processed through a method that involves the use of evaporation ponds (images 3 and 4) where the extracted briny water, pumped from a series of underground wells, is collected and left to evaporate.
