Lithium is used in rechargeable batteries in devices and vehicles, and copper is a conduit. In April and May, I was in Chile to begin a project that will examine the environmental, social, and economic implications of the growing demand for the resources necessary for the transition to green and renewable energy. This project has been developed with support from the National Geographic Society and the Climate Pledge. In these pictures: Chuquicamata is a village established when an adjacent copper mine opened. After significant mining and open-pit expansion, the town ended up being too close to the mining operations and was then relocated. Chuquicamata’s pit is the largest open-pit copper mine by extracted volume in the world. Chilean lithium is processed through a method that involves the use of evaporation ponds (images 3 and 4) where the extracted briny water, pumped from a series of underground wells, is collected and left to evaporate.
