While phytoplankton make up less than 1% of biomass on Earth, we 100% need them.

In 2024, NASA is launching the PACE (plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, and ocean Ecosystem) satellite to study these tiny aquatic organisms. Phytoplankton float on and in the surface of the ocean and other water bodies. Without them, most oceanic food webs would collapse. The creatures also play a key role in the global carbon cycle, absorbing carbon from the atmosphere, like plants do on land.

Some phytoplankton, like cyanobacteria, can also be harmful to an ecosystem. These phytoplankton species can produce harmful toxins that are dangerous for humans and marine species. PACE data will make it easier to identify these species and find ways to mitigate the impacts of harmful algal blooms.

Image description:
A Landsat image of phytoplankton blooms around an island in the Baltic Sea. The land is a long and thin brown mass stretching from the top to the bottom of the image. The water swirling around the land looks like an impressionistic painting. To the left of the land, the water is mostly darker blue with lighter blue streaks. To the right, swirls of green phytoplankton mix with light blue and dark blue water.
