Over the course of a conversation, he asked if I'd seen the Huntington Beach Surf Festival. I never had, and I wondered aloud: Is the beach crazy crowded? When he said 100,000, I suddenly imagined all those people on the beach from above. I'd need to rent a helicopter, of course. We made one turn over the beach, and I was lucky enough to catch this amazing view looking straight down. Seeing all these people on the sand form a quilt-like tapestry of color was one of the highlights of creating my book, "California One."
