Video by National Geographic Explorer @federicopardophoto | Critically endangered cotton-top tamarins are found only in the tropical dry forests of northern Colombia. These rare creatures are known for having a sophisticated form of communication, with evidence of a grammatical structure, and are recognizable by their puffy white crests. With 42 monkey species, Colombia has the sixth highest primate diversity on the planet. However, the same areas that shelter monkeys are also areas with high deforestation rates. The cotton-top tamarin is at risk from this habitat destruction along with the illegal pet trade.

Saving Primates (Salvando Primates) is a multimedia immersive experience designed to connect Colombians with their country’s biodiversity and catalyze forest restoration efforts to help conserve the cotton-top tamarin. Supported by National Geographic Society (@insidenatgeo), the immersive experience opened in Bogotá with the aim of expanding to more cities in Colombia as well as greater South and North America.
