If the fashion world once adhered to the belief that you’ll sleep when you’re dead, or at most, dead tired, a new wave of tech is out to, instead, optimize sleep. “The pandemic brought home the importance of sleep,” says Ana C. Krieger, MD, director for the Center for Sleep Medicine at Weill Cornell in New York, where she says she’s had a 50 percent increase in patients since 2020. “In the past, sleep was seen as something we can easily discard, and never prioritize.” But in lockdown people found they had more time to sleep—and also a higher incidence of stress-induced sleeplessness. According to the Centers for Disease Control, a third of American adults are sleep-deprived, routinely getting fewer than the recommended seven to eight hours per night.
