St. Andrews Bay is the largest breeding colony on this remote subantarctic island that’s home to half the world’s king penguin population. The year-round colony here is a busy place, with pairs swapping care for their offspring, a cycle that can take about 13 to 16 months from egg to fledge. If all goes well in their lifetime foraging for fish, squid, and krill, king penguins can live for more than 20 years.
