The director Christopher Nolan wrote his new film “Oppenheimer” with the actor Cillian Murphy in mind. In an interview with The New York Times, Murphy opened up about carrying a major movie for the first time, a responsibility he takes very seriously, and the pressure he felt living up to the admired director’s expectations.

“Oppenheimer,” out in theaters July 21, tells the tale of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who developed the atomic bomb. As with most Nolan films (the Dark Knight trilogy, “Dunkirk,” “Inception,” “Interstellar”), the movie’s scale is substantial and ambitious. And although Murphy had worked regularly with Nolan for more than 20 years, he had played only supporting roles in his films. The actor admitted that while playing a lead for Nolan was a dream, he took the time to prepare for the role because he was “working with one of the greatest living directors.”

Over the past decade, Murphy’s sapphire stare and coiled intensity have become familiar to millions of television viewers who have watched him play Tommy Shelby, the mesmerizing center of the British hit television series “Peaky Blinders,” even as he has maintained a thriving career onstage and in film.

“For me it’s always the script first and the medium second,” Murphy said. “I’ve always believed that good work begets good work. If you’re doing a play above a pub, someone may see it; it’s not the scale, it’s the quality.”
