Hard to put into words how much it meant to me arriving by horse to some of the most sacred places in the Buddhist Vajrayana tradition. Following the steps of Guru Rimpoche, who brought Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century we rode our horses for 5 hours a day and hiked for about 3 with almost no hot water and seldom electricity. The land opens itslef in a different way when arriving by these soulful four legged creatures. We rode for 5 days to Lo Manthang the capital of Upper Mustang. This kingdom was just opened to the world in the 1990’s and it is a beacon of the Tibetan life and customs that have been so relentlessly contested and suppressed in other parts of the world.
