Years ago, the director and cinematographer Ian Moubayed (@madebymoubayed) got locked out of his New York City apartment in the middle of the night. He found a locksmith to help him get back in, and he realized that locksmiths have a unique window on the lives of New Yorkers—they are summoned in moments of great stress, by customers from all backgrounds and with all kinds of stories. That interaction was the catalyst for Moubayed’s short documentary “Keys to the City,” which follows a locksmith who, on the cusp of retirement, imparts lessons of the trade to his protégé. Moubayed has come to see the story as a metaphor for the way that the city, and the people in it, evolve with time. “At the heart of it, it’s really about coming to peace with change in different shades,” he said.
