In 2015, a group of women were reportedly turned away from a screening of “Carol” at the #CannesFilmFestival because they were wearing flat shoes, an incident that thrust the festival’s somewhat antiquated dress code into the spotlight. In the years to follow, stars including Julia Roberts and Kristen Stewart have chosen to walk the carpet barefoot as a way to show solidarity with those who had been turned away in the past.
