For years I used to say that I was Tuna’s rescuer. I realised years later that I was saying that incorrectly because I didn’t actually rescue him. The people who found him on the side of the road somewhere near San Diego when he was just a puppy, rescued him. Robin Fabin rescued him from the LA County shelter so that he wouldn’t be euthanised, and then brought him to a Farmer’s Market to get him adopted. That’s where I entered the story, in 2010, but I was just the person who adopted him, and I often referred to myself as that after my above discovery. Last night my perspective around that changed though. We are babysitting our friend’s children this weekend, and Grace came downstairs from one of their rooms with the book I wrote about Tuna in 2015 (no longer for sale, btw) It was her first time seeing it and she was so excited to see Tuna on the cover. I explained to her why I wrote a book and then I decided to read it- something I hadn’t done in almost 7 years. The book is about a day in the life of Tuna and it showcases our relationship and personalities. It’s kind of a silly book where I tell him his story in the last chapter, but before the story begins, I dedicate the book “to every person who has ever rescued an animal in need.” Then it hit me and I knew what I meant when I made that dedication. I realised that while I might not have actually rescued Tuna, I am a big part of his rescue story, thus, I too am one of his many rescuers because he was rescued out of a life that may not be what his is today. And what a story it is- one that I had the highest honour to write about and share with all of you. So I’ll say it again! THANK YOU to every person who has ever rescued an animal in need whether you fostered, adopted, or did the actual rescuing. You are SO significant to that animals life, and without you, their story wouldn’t be what it is today, so you are their rescuer! And while you may consider them your greatest gift, I have a hunch that you are theirs! #nationalrescuedogday (and every other type of animal in my eyes!)
