Sisters from another mister. Cinematic alter egos. However you define it, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Nicole Holofcener have a connection that rivals the great movie partnerships of our time.

Holofcener, who directed Louis-Dreyfus in the new film “You Hurt My Feelings,” has a lot in common with the actress: two grown sons, a healthy self-deprecating attitude and the ability to riff on any topic, including cake, Hollywood gossip and the indignities of aging. On the set of their new film, they were like two halves of the same person. “They have the same sense of humor, the same honesty, the same potty mouth,” one of the film’s producers, Anthony Bregman, said. “But I think what’s at the core is that they have the same disbelief, or wonder, at the narcissism of social interaction.”

The idea for the movie came about when Holofcener started screening her movies or having people read her scripts and wondering if they were telling her their honest opinions. She wrote this script with Louis-Dreyfus in mind, and Louis-Dreyfus connected with it immediately. “I think it’s interesting to consider the notion of worth and self-worth,” Louis-Dreyfus said in an interview with The New York Times. “Am I my work? And who am I without my work? That’s certainly something I like to think about.”

In the movie, Louis-Dreyfus’s character is hurt after her husband trashes her novel. “I think all of us are sometimes still 16,” Holofcener said. “Especially when it comes to getting approval or not getting approval. I still think of myself that way. So that’s funny to see a grown-up person behave like they’re 16, in an honest way.”
