‘I like people who dare’ - Peter Hujar

Peter Hujar (1934-1987) was a leading figure in the group of artists, musicians, writers, and performers at the forefront of the cultural scene in downtown New York in the 1970s and early 80s. He was enormously admired for his completely uncompromising attitude towards work and life.

Hujar was particularly well known for capturing intimate portraits of his close friends, including Andy Warhol, Susan Sontag and Candy Darling. Candy Darling was a transgender superstar who appeared in several of Warhol’s works in New York in the early 1970s. Hujar’s portrait of Candy shows her in a hospital bed, surrounded by flowers, before she died of cancer at the age of twenty-nine. Hujar had a deep understanding for the individuality of his subjects, conveying, at once, their armour and their vulnerability.

Hujar died of aids-related pneumonia at the age of fifty-three, leaving behind a powerful and profound portfolio.
