Video by @クリス・バーカード | Shooting from the air comes with a different set of variables to navigate. There are the thermals, or warm air rising because of uneven heating over the ground, to navigate. Steep temperature drops, with conditions getting colder the higher the altitude and with windchills, make it difficult for your hands to handle the camera, even with gloves. Finally, you have to coordinate with the pilot for the best angles and speed, optimized in this case with the aerial trike, an ultralight aircraft. To access New Cuyama, California, and the Caliente Mountain Ridge for a recent National Geographic assignment, pilot and photographer Chris Bredine flew us over a cloud layer that required a climb to more than 8,000 feet (2,400 m), where the temperature dropped to about 10°F (-12°C).
