Ethiopia’s gelada monkeys seem to break all the rules expected for primates: They eat mostly grass, they live on mountaintops, and they sometimes form massive herds. The largest I’ve seen is about 800 monkeys. But don't let these numbers fool you. After decades of farm expansion and other pressures, there aren’t many alpine grasslands like this left in Ethiopia, the only country where you can find this animal species. This particular grassland, called the Guassa Community Conservation Area, sits on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. It has been protected by the local community for centuries and is a key site for scientific research on this unique and important species.
