When Bryant Donham was a 21-year-old living in Money, Mississippi, in 1955, she accused a 14-year-old Black boy of improperly whistling at her at a local store.  That boy was Emmett Till.  Shortly after the incident, Bryant Donham’s then-husband, Roy Bryant, and his half-brother, J.W. Milam, brutally murdered Till in retribution. An all-white jury acquitted the 2 men, even though they admitted to the deed in an interview after the trial.  The lynching of Till was one of the early inciting incidents of the Civil Rights Movement. The decision of his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, to give her son an open-casket funeral allowed photos of his disfigured corpse to be shared nationwide, engendering sympathy and outrage.  Later in life, Bryant Donham admitted she had lied on the stand as a witness in Till’s trial, falsely testifying that the teenager had made aggressive verbal and physical advances toward her. She later famously said, ‘Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him.’  Last year, a grand jury in Leflore County, Mississippi, considered whether to bring decades-belated charges of kidnapping and manslaughter against the elderly woman for her role in Till’s death.
