In the wake of social and political turmoil, a vibrant cultural movement emerged in 19th-century Denmark—and many artists turned to water for inspiration.

A symbol of national pride and security, especially in the Royal Danish Navy and Danish merchant fleet—as well as a place of adventure, history, and exploration—the sea influenced many Danish artists of the era as they dug into notions of place, belonging, and identity.

In this 1839 painting, Martinus Rørbye captures a calm moment on Copenhagen’s harbor, seen from the ramparts of the formidable but battered citadel, which remains part of Denmark’s national and cultural heritage today.

Rather than focus on the structure and its military role in defending the city amid a time of national upheaval, Rørbye turns his figures to face the sea.

Moonlight silhouettes two sailors and a soldier and also illuminates the harbor, whose gentle waves lead to the Øresund (Sound)—the narrow strait that separates Denmark from Sweden and feeds into the Baltic and North Seas.

LAST CHANCE—See this work on view in "Beyond the Light: Identity and Place in 19th-Century Danish Art" through April 16.
