In an essay for HuffPost, guest writer Leigh Stuart shares how she overcame her intense fear of flying, which affected her personal and work life. Stuart, a professional cellist, would travel by bus, train, car and any other possible way to avoid being on a plane.

“Instead of catching a flight I’d booked to my best friend’s wedding in Virginia, I rented a car in New York and drove all night to get there in time. The addictive relief I felt overpowered any embarrassment or stress over extra expenses on my credit card,” she writes. “In the years that followed, I took buses and trains from New York to Texas, Nevada, Utah and California to perform one-off concerts.”

However, it quickly became impossible for Stuart to take the time to travel or even make it from one concert to the next in time.

“Everyone had advice for me. I tried therapy, cocktails before the flight, Xanax, Valium, hypnosis, support groups, but none of it helped … Unwilling to accept my failure to conquer a self-created problem, I decided to try once more.”

Head to our link in bio to see what treatment finally cured Stuart’s phobia.
