All who met our dog Hud would describe him as an elegant gent. When he was still a puppy, I made a t-shirt inspired by Hud with the help of the art director @snshahid—we imagined him as a prizefighter making his debut in Vegas. But nothing could have been further from the truth. Hud was a gentle soul through and through, “a lover not a fighter” who was always up for some mischief and welcomed a good time. When we'd wear that shirt, sometimes Hud would look up at Nan or I with an expression that seemed to say, “This is my family.”

Hud came from the kennel of Pat and Tom Downing up on Wolfe Island in Canada. The years we spent playing together in our backyard have been some of the happiest in our lives. It’s a sad day for us, for we lost Hud yesterday after a battle with cancer. His bravery—and the joy he brought us for 12 wonderful years—were unequalled.

Thank you to everyone in Golden Beach, Montauk and beyond who put in a loving, helping hand with Hud in the hopes of one day seeing him get well, in particular @richamaro, Dr. Tom Sessa, @hheather_hammerlein_ , @suzemazzei13, @cecemotta11, Dennis Lennox, @zacrup and Robin Coppola. Nan and I are forever grateful.
