Our Issue Forty-Seven home tour is of Vill'Alcina, architect Sergio Fernandez's vacation home, which overlooks the bay where Portugal meets Spain. Fernandez grew up under dictator António de Oliveira Salazar, a ruler who idolized the intimidating architectural visions of fascist Germany and Italy. Along with many Portuguese architects of the time, Fernandez tried to create something different: buildings characterized by comfort, functionality and a sense of place. "We were all engaged in the revolution," Fernandez explains. After 48 years, Salazar’s rule was overthrown on April 25, 1974—incidentally, Fernandez’s birthday.
