I believe many shy people like myself are drawn to photography for a reason. We’re never the most popular kids in class or the captain of the football team. I was a quiet child, not at all athletic—so photography became my sport, a life force that drew me to be part of what was happening out on the street. It was a key that allowed me to walk into places where I was too odd to be invited on my own. Photography became a way to express that striving for something I longed to be but wasn’t. When I look at the photographs of these extraordinary women, I laugh to myself and have to admit that without my camera, I probably never would have had the nerve to even speak to them, let alone have any expectation that they would be willing to do some outrageous thing—like dive in a lake in a gown or strike a pose on an elephant—all for the sake of a picture. From the moment of taking these photographs, I knew I wanted to stay close with these women for the rest of my life. They each possessed an honesty and vulnerability that made them so powerful in front of my camera. To me, they are more than some of the most beautiful women in the world—they are artists, dancers, mothers, and friends. That’s the magical thing about looking back at these images now, so many years later. Up there on the wall, again and again, are the moments I was lucky enough to share with them, framed by my viewfinder. Through the travels and assignments that brought us together for a day or two or sometimes just a couple of hours, these images remain, marking the time. And the memories of those halcyon days endure. Isetan The Space 3 Chome-14-1 Shinjuku Shinjuku City, Tokyo 160-0022」2月25日 10時45分 - bruce_weber

OPENS TODAY @ ISETAN THE SPACE: “Those Halcyon Days”

I wanted this exhibition to be a celebration of the people who helped me bring stories to life in magazines and campaigns over the years.
