Emerald Glacier, Yoho NP, Canada. Photo by @peteressick on assignment for @natgeo. In recent years photographs of glaciers have taken on a political tone. To be sure, all of the glaciers in Yoho NP are retreating. In the last ice age, there would have been ice a kilometer thick in the Yoho valley bottoms. Even a hundred years ago, all of the glacier would have been much bigger and healthier. For this story, I thought it was important to show one glacier up close because the handiwork of the glaciers - the classic U-shaped valleys, sculpted rocks and blue lakes- are everywhere to be seen in Yoho. They are still the stars of this show, even though they are not shining as brightly as in the past. To get up to a glacier safely, I hired Barry Blanchard, a legendary Canadian Rockies climbing guide and a glacier expert extraordinaire. We spent half a day climbing up to the Emerald Glacier with a slow pace of a couple of guys who had logged a lot of miles, or perhaps it was the 60+ pound packs filled with climbing and photo gear. When we got up on the glacier, Barry's gait picked up quite a bit and I was amazed at his skill on the ice. It is rare nowadays to meet someone who is totally REAL, but Barry is truly one of a kind. Whether he was yodeling down the trail or putting out a large belch after fixing a meal of curry chicken and Nepalese tea, who can not appreciate someone who seems to have found personal freedom by following his passion and doing exactly what he loves to do?
