Orchid mania, known as “orchiderlium” was an obsession with pillaging these flowers to brink of extinction in early 20th century.
The greeks called them Orchis, which translates as testicles (named after their root shape, oddly ignoring the obvious vaginal motif of petals) and so they were eaten as an aphrodisiac. Which is ironic considering they have the smallest seeds in the world (microscopic) and take about 7 years to finally bloom. But despite all the ransacking and innate fragility they’re one of the oldest flowers to exist- since before the continents separated!
