2014年の東京ドームの楽屋で僕は、初めて会うストーンズのメンバーとの対面を前に極度に緊張していた。そんな時、一番初めに僕に声をかけてくれたのがチャーリー・ワッツさんだった。ただニコッとウインクしてサムズアップしてくれたことで、どれだけホッとしただろう。リハーサルが始まる前の彼のまさにジェントルマンな振る舞いがとても印象に残ってる。ジャケットとローファー姿でドラムセットに座り、ゆったりとした所作でジャケットを脱ぎセット横のハンガーにかけ、ローファーをスニーカーに履き変え、左腕からアンティークと思わしき美しい腕時計を外しジャケットのポケットにしまった。そしてジャズの2ビートを軽やかに叩き始めた。「なんとエレガントなドラマーだろう！」と僕は溜め息を殺せなかった。ライブ本番中にも何度か目が合うと小さなウインクを送ってくれた。「そうそう、リラックスして楽しむのさ」と語りかけてくれているようだった。奇跡的にも背中で聴いた彼のビートは他の何者とも違う。キースがガツンとコードを鳴らし、2拍後にはチャーリーがそのビートを捉え追いかける。スイングするロックンロールビートはまさにストーンズのグルーヴの核だった。素晴らしき唯一無二のドラマーのご冥福を心からお祈りします。

When I first met the members of the Rolling Stones in 2014, I was quite nervous in the dressing room at the Tokyo Dome. But Charlie Watts was the one who broke the ice first. He generously smiled, gave me a wink with thumbs-up, and it helped me to relief the tension a lot. I still remember the moves he made as a true gentleman right before the sound check. He sat on a drum throne with his jacket and loafers on, slowly took off his jacket and put it on a hanger on the side, changed his loafers to sneakers, removed his beautiful antique watch from left wrist and put it in the pocket of his jacket. Then he started playing jazzy 2 beats spontaneously. I was so impressed and thought “What an elegant drummer!”. Even during the live, he gave me a wink quietly when we looked each other. It was almost telling me that “That’s right, be relaxed and enjoy!”. The beat I was able to hear on my back was totally different from others. Kieth strums a chord boldly and 2 beats later, Charlie starts chasing it. The rock’n’roll beat that actually swings was the core of the Stones’ groove. I genuinely pray that the one and only, outstanding drummer may rest in peace.
