As I child I grew up so insecure about how dark I got with the sun because my family would make fun of me and call me names. I only found out as I got older that my Grandfather was of Aztec decent but they were ashamed of it. They felt they were looked down on by others especially coming from Mexico. Not everyone had dark skin but me and my dad were blessed with it as well as some of my uncles who picked on me about it. My mom was pale white like milk and she would tell me the sun loves me and I was kissed by it. My dad broke that cycle of shame and educated us on our culture. He was proud of it and occasionally took us to pow wows. He would come out of the stands and dance when they allowed it. He did his best to help us understand who we are and how to connect. As an adult my goal is to get as dark as I can in the summer. I wear sunscreen of course but I love being in the sun and if you let me I would bake under the sun all day. If you have children 👶🏽 let’s stop the cycle of making them feel insecure about their skin color, their weight, or their preferences. As long as they are happy and healthy let’s get to a place where we just love others without making them feel like less. Children are so impressionable, the smallest negative comment may impact their life forever.
