Poke-ball fireworks are the perfect combination of a traditional craft rendered in contemporary form. Something I think Japan excels at. Summer fireworks were used during the Edo period as a form of crowd control. The displays drew people from their homes out onto River banks to cool down during the ridiculously hot summer nights, quelling tempers and potential social dissent. It would take more than that to remedy the bad feeling the people of Tokyo have right now towards the Japanese government and the IOC. But these bursts of joy might have helped a little bit.
