Mended Petal
Repost @artinstitutechi
This sculpture by Yoko Ono—"Mended Petal" (2016)—represents the 13th petal from her installation "SKYLANDING," a 12-petal lotus in Chicago’s Jackson Park that rises from the ashes of the Phoenix Pavilion.
The Phoenix Hall was Japan’s main national pavilion at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. It remained as a gift to the city after the fair, a symbol of mutual respect and friendship between Japan and the United States. Following the outbreak of World War II and the subsequent imprisonment of Japanese Americans in internment camps, the Phoenix Pavilion was destroyed by two fires in 1945 and 1946, thought to be acts of arson. In contrast to the smooth petals of "SKYLANDING," "Mended Petal" has visible seams of repair, symbolically commemorating the ground-healing ceremony held by the artist in June 2015 through which she prepared the site of the lost Phoenix Pavilion for her new work.
