At the same time, these regions are essential for the healthy functioning of our ocean. Last month, John Kerry, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate conveyed the United States’ support for the three marine protected area proposals (MPA) currently under consideration by the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), the body charged with protecting biodiversity in Antarctica’s waters. These MPA proposals would offer urgently needed protections for iconic ocean life inhabiting the Southern Ocean around the Antarctic Peninsula, Weddell Sea and East Antarctica. Endangered species of penguins, whales seals and seabirds will benefit from these conservation measures. Thank you, Special Envoy Kerry, for your support. In addition, the President of Chile, Sebastian Piñera @sebastianpinerae reaffirmed Chile’s strong commitment to advance the Antarctic Peninsula MPA proposal which Chile and Argentina are championing together.
