My heart breaks for all Asian people who feel like they’re constantly standing on the outside. For those who feel ridiculed for embracing their own culture. For those who are made fun of for their features, then have to sit silently and watch as others play asian dress up, tape their eyes back, and are celebrated for it. For those constantly worrying that they’re a fetish or a phase. For those emasculated by the media. For the elderly who are pushed aside, ridiculed and then forgotten. For the service workers who are laughed at behind their backs. For the sex workers who are disrespected by nearly everyone. For those who feel insignificant. Erased. For those who chip away at their own identity in order to fit into smaller and smaller boxes of what society wants them to be. I hate how much comfort playing that person gave me for such a long time. My heart has been breaking these past few days over the gaslighting I’ve seen. Especially those who feel it’s more important to play the devil’s advocate when discussing murder and racism than to listen to those who are sharing their pain. My heart hurts that I’m seeing people who look like my family on TV, but only because they’re covered in blood. Our collective thoughts have built the world that we live in. Our words, jokes, comments, whispers, lyrics, tweets, movies.. all built everything we have come to know. Acts of hate, no matter how small, are heard and are felt by the world. What is but a passing comment to you may shape how the person it was directed towards sees themselves. And sometimes they hurt. And hurt. And l may not even know why. Until the hatred spills out of them too and this dark cycle continues on. I hope that asian people can live fully and freely and loudly. I hope that Asian faces are seen as American beauties too. I know there is enough love in the world, but the news has shown that right now, not enough has been given. My heart breaks with every single account of race-driven violence towards Asians.

My heart breaks for all Asian people who feel like they’re constantly standing on the outside. For those who feel ridiculed for embracing their own culture. For those who are made fun of for their features, then have to sit silently and watch as others play asian dress up, tape their eyes back, and are celebrated for it.
