The reason you can have all the things above and get the meaningful benefits of fasting has to do with two big signaling molecules in the body. You can drink these things because: - Your insulin stays level - A signaling compound called MTOR stays low so your body can clean itself up via autophagy That means you can get the benefits of a fast as long as you: - Avoid things that raise your insulin - Avoid things that raise MTOR Just make sure you don’t have protein (up to 15 grams a day of any protein will raise your MTOR, but zero protein is better), and don’t eat any digestible carbs (they raise insulin). Smaller amounts of good fats are safe. If you keep your insulin low and you don't raise MTOR, you'll get the vast majority of the benefits of a fast. Thus, good fats are ok. Sugar and protein are not! You can do a water-only fast if you want to, and there may be reasons to do a long water fast with a doctor. Some people believe you can only have water during a fast because that’s what mice did in a study.

Mice don’t have careers, pandemic stress, or kids running around the house. They don’t have espresso machines either. 🤷‍♂️

That means there are some things you can do during a fast that make it far easier and more enjoyable so you can show up in your life while learning to intermittent fast. I’ve learned these things from sharing intermittent fasting with hundreds of thousands of people over the last ten years.

The reason you can have all the things above and get the meaningful benefits of fasting has to do with two big signaling molecules in the body. You can drink these things because:
- Your insulin stays level
- A signaling compound called MTOR stays low so your body can clean itself up via autophagy

That means you can get the benefits of a fast as long as you:
- Avoid things that raise your insulin
- Avoid things that raise MTOR

Just make sure you don’t have protein (up to 15 grams a day of any protein will raise your MTOR, but zero protein is better), and don’t eat any digestible carbs (they raise insulin).

But trying to do that when you start fasting will make you hate your life and stop fasting. 😃

See you there!
