Bey began his career capturing life on the streets of Harlem in the 1970s, embarking on a five-year journey which would form his seminal early series, Harlem USA (1975–1979). Over the years that followed, Bey rose to renown for his intimate, raw and warm portrayals of African American communities in cities across the States, focusing in particular on the lives of young Black individuals. “My interest in young people has to do with the fact that they are the arbiters of style in the community; their appearance speaks most strongly of how a community of people defines themselves at a particular historical moment,” Bey has said.
