Today is Purim, a Jewish holiday that is usually celebrated with a party or big feast, sharing food with friends and family and giving gifts to those less fortunate. In the Jewish religion, everyone Is supposed to give to charity, even little kids. In fact, in every Jewish preschool, the first project is usually creating a Tzedakah Box. Tzedakah means justice. Then, when the kids enter the classroom every day, they put a few cents in the box. When the box is full, the money collected is given to a charity. The point is to show children how small donations can add up over time, especially if they are being collected by a larger community. It occurred to me that the concept is pretty similar to what a lot of Instagram accounts are doing with micro fundraising. And since we didn’t have a big party to celebrate Purim this year, I thought I would use this opportunity to fill a virtual tzedakah box with anyone in this community who would like to contribute. Today, I would like to give to a NYC charity called WIN, which stands for Women In Need. Founded in 1983, @winnyc_org began as a shelter for four homeless women and their combined six children. Today, they are the largest provider of shelter and supportive housing to homeless families in NYC, housing 4700 people, including 2700 children each night. Someone told me recently that the #1 item needed by shelters is underwear, so today, my goal is to buy all the toddler socks and underwear off WIN’s East River registry, which would equal $5201.
