Words by @freddiewilkinson // We got to meet a lot of interesting people while reporting on the Siachen Conflict, but one of my favorites was Brigadier General (ret) Abdul Bilal of the Special Services Group of the Pakistan Army. In 1989, Bilal, then a Major and the operations officer for the 323 Brigade, personally led a team which was long-lined by helicopter to above 20,000 feet on Peak 22158, where they climbed up a technical corniced ridge to attack an Indian OP. The engagement is the highest lethal ground combat ever recorded, and a unique moment in military history. Bilal had previously trained with the Green Berets at Fort Benning and Fort Bragg, earning distinction in the U.S. Special Forces Officer Course // shot #onassignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック for 'A Line in the Mountains' out now in the March '21 issue.
