"Growing up, my sister and I always traveled. Our parents instilled in us the importance of culture at an early age. They were instrumental in my decision to become an aviator. So, it is no wonder why I became a Flight Attendant and then a Pilot. However, the path to the flight deck was not easy.
The stereotype in society today is that women are Flight Attendants and men are Pilots. As a Black woman in aviation, I can say that I am both. However, even though I have traveled the world, most of my obstacles and challenges have come from me being a Black female Pilot.
So what are some ways that I've found support from the people around me? Well, I would say that you should have a mentor or two! I surround myself with people I ask the hard questions to and aviators that have had more experience than myself. In turn, I mentor other aspiring aviators to follow their dreams.
Black History Month celebrates the legacy and culture that set the foundation for the future. I look up to notable aviators such as Bessie Coleman and Delta's First African-American Captain, Stephanie Johnson. I hope that I can be a role model for future aviators." - Andrea P. - Flight Attendant, #ATL
Finding support from those around us can help us soar to new heights. By proving stereotypes wrong and gaining wisdom from those around us, we can be role models for future generations.
