In the spring of 2017, authorities in Xinjiang, one of the most ethnically diverse regions in China, began to detain thousands of ethnic and religious minorities in secret “reëducation centers.” By 2018, as many as a million people were held in a vast network of detention centers. “Nobody interrogated me,” said Erbaqyt Otarbai, a truck driver who was detained after saving religious videos on WhatsApp. “Nobody told me what was happening.” In 2019, authorities claimed that detainees had “graduated.” Evidence shows that many were sentenced to long prison terms or forced labor instead. In a new, immersive investigation, three former detainees reveal the world inside the camps, where prisoners spent 10 hours a day taking classes focussed on political indoctrination and the dangers of Islam, and some endured torture and beatings.
