Photo by Robin Hammond @hammond_robin / This photo of nine-year-old Fang Wang was shot for National Geographic’s special issue exploring the meaning of gender. She was one of nearly one hundred nine-year-olds that I photographed and interviewed, asking them a series of questions about their perceptions of gender.

This shoot took place in Yaqueshui Village, in China's Hubei Province. Fang’s family lives on a farm. Fang told me that if she was a boy, she wouldn’t have to comb her hair in the morning, but that she’d have to feed the chickens and pigs and harvest sweet potatoes. She says that if she could change anything in her life, she would do something about her loneliness. You can see more of these nine-year-olds on my account @hammond_robin.
