New Mars rover just dropped (gently). And we have photos.
Less than a day after the Perseverance Mars rover landed on the surface of the Red Planet, mission teams at @NASAJPL released the first photos of the rover’s descent as well as its first views from its new home in Jezero Crater.
The images, from left to right:
- High-resolution image aboard the descent stage captured Perseverance being lowered by its skycrane
- Perseverance’s first full-color image of Mars sent back by the rover’s Hazard Cameras on the spacecraft’s underside
- A look at one of the rover’s six large wheels on the Martian soil
- The descent stage holding Perseverance falls through the Martian atmosphere as seen by the @UAHiRISE camera aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
A primary objective for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology research, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will also be the first mission to collect samples that will be returned to Earth on a future mission.
