The powerful, unexpected, and oversized Schiaparelli jewelry, exploring the themes of the human body, has a strong liaison with the Surrealist avant-garde Parisian scene of the ’30s. The eyes, nose, lips, and fingers were obsessions of Salvador Dalí and Elsa Schiaparelli. During their longtime collaborative friendship, both Dalí and Schiaparelli created several experimental body adornments.  Inspired by the Surrealist lip embroideries from the Schiaparelli 1938 winter Haute Couture collection, both attracted by the sensual Mae West’s lips, Dalí recreated the actress come-hither smile as a brooch in 1949. The exquisite piece was composed of two rows of lustrous pearl teeth, that sat between ruby lips. Schiaparelli’s 1936 Red Nail Gloves also inspired Dalí and his Sculptured Gold Hand, a gilded appendage with branch-like fingers that transformed the head into a jewel itself when placed along the jaw and cheek.  There is also the iconic Eye of Cocteau, a Surrealist symbol that was created by artist Jean Cocteau for Schiaparelli in 1937. Later echoed by Dalí’s Eye of Time brooch, this piece was designed in 1949 as a gift for his wife, Gala. Composed of two shades of blue enamel, mounted in platinum, and set with round and baguette diamonds and a cabochon ruby, the hands of the clock are suspended in time.  The both sophisticated and fantastical lives of these surrealists are reimagined by Schiaparelli today with astonishing pieces that are intended to enchant and amaze beyond time. As Dalí notes: “I’m glad that people smile at telephone earrings. A smile is something pleasant.
