"I am what my friend Abby would generously call an archivist, which is to say I like to hold onto things," shares one Vogue editor for our annual Love Stories series, addressing love in all its forms. "I’m not sure how (or if) other people preserve their exes, but my way of dealing with these memories is by keeping them in a plain white paper box with a lid. The Box is a place I find myself revisiting once per breakup, though I don’t even know how conscious I was of the ritual until this time around.

There isn’t room for much in my 400-square-foot apartment, let alone the ghosts of past relationships. Over time, memorabilia from my former flames has found its way to this safe, central place. The Box lives in a cabinet in my kitchen because I feel oddly superstitious about keeping it in my bedroom. Each time I open it is like an archeological dig, excavating relics from my past, layer by layer."
